Studio visits

Hey everyone!

I'm going to call some places to try and set up studio visits for October 2nd. So far I've heard that there's interest in visiting Hammerpress, Willoughby, VML, and Design Ranch. I talked to Suba to see if she had suggestions and contacts for us. She's also going to check the schedule for Blacktop to see if we could visit there. If we do visit Blacktop, it would have to be before noon because they leave early on Fridays.

So comment on here and let me know where you guys want to visit and I'll give them a call. Of the ones I mentioned, let me know which ones you are most interested in. We will probably be able to fit 3 in one day. Let me know by today or Tuesday, if you can.

Hope you all have a great labor day weekend!

Meeting Notes for March 1st

Notes 3.1.2011                                    10 People

-Kaleidoscope: no more than 7 people
    -we picked Saturday April 9th
-meet at 8am-leave 8:15 and arrive at 9:30
-organized crafts-groups of kids in 45 min shifts
-Crown Center-one hour break for lunch, bring money
-We stay and work until 4:30pm
-Field Trip: 3-4 studios at a time

-Try for the April 1st date.
-sign-up on bulletin board for which studios to visit.
-AIGA will pay for gas for those that drive
-Babcock believes that we should split the trips into multiple days.
-We may attempt a Tuesday or Thursday if it works into people's schedules, simply because it would work for some companies.
-Marie is creating a list of fall-back questions to use if you can't think of anything to talk about at the tour. Some questions are only for the president and others are only for a designer. Yes, there is a difference between the two people. Great presidents will allow you to talk with a graphic designer for a while, since they're the ones doing the actual work.
-Next meeting: talk about class schedules, etc. maybe plan a game night, mock interviews?

Studios who agreed to a tour:
- Indicia (indiciadesign.com) - unspecified
- Willoughby Design (willoughbydesign.com) - a Friday, preferably before noon
- Brockton Creative Group (brocktoncg.com) - unspecified; not yet responded for April 1st
- Zero Design (zerodesign.com) - a Friday or Saturday
- HypeLife Brands (hypelifebrands.com) - currently scheduling a weekday
- Muller Bressler Brown (mbbagency.com) - a Friday
- Reactor Design Studio (yourreactor.com) - a Friday
- River City Studio (rivercitystudio.com) - good for April 1st

Career Services

For those who don't already know, Career Services is available to all UCM students. They have a great office located in 302 in the Elliott Union. If you register with Career Services, they have a nifty networking tool called the Central Career Network (CCN). Here, you can see potential employer profiles, post your resume, and find out about new job postings.

The new career development coordinator for our department is Keira Mann. We have a group appointment set up for Monday, September 14th at 6 p.m.  We will meet in Grinstead 311 like any other meeting, and will walk over to Career Services as a group (for all those who don't know where the office is). Keira will take about an hour to guide all of our students through the registration process and show us around the CCN. All students, whether you are paying AIGA dues or not, are invited and encouraged to attend!
*please note that this is a great networking opportunity for underclassmen/women who are thinking about doing an internship... and seniors, Career Services is not just here to help you find your first job, but their services are for a lifetime.*

AIGA KC Film Series - Objectified

AIGA KC is doing a film series with documentary type films that are related to design. You can go to this web page on their site for more information:
http://www.kansascity.aiga.org/events/2009/09/33343382
Cost is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. It is at the Tivoli Theatre in Westport.
Before the movie there is an informal happy hour at McCoy's in Westport, from 6:00 to 7:15, where you can meet other AIGA people and potential employers. For the last film I went just to McCoy's and skipped the film. Either way try to take advantage of what the KC chapter has to offer. I will try to go this time again. People should get together and carpool.

NOTES FROM 1ST MEETING

Notes from Rootbeer Float Social/Meeting on Aug. 20th & Aug. 31st.

Thanks to everyone that was able to join us at the rootbeer float social! For those of you who weren't able to make it, you will be delighted to know that we have a bunch left over and will be enjoying it at the first meeting (which is not scheduled just yet).

Included in this message:
  • Meeting Time(s)
  • Group Blog
  • Greeting Cards
  • First Friday Field Trip(s)
  • Oct. Trip
  • Career Services
  • Membership Information
  • Design Studio

Meetings will be held every other Monday at 6 p.m. in Grinstead 311. Occasional meetings will be held on Thursdays at 5 p.m. to catch anyone who can't make the Monday meetings.

One of the first projects of the semester will include starting a group blog. All members (paid & unpaid) will have admin rights and can post whenever they want...when we set it up we'll let you know.

Another project will continue in our tradition of creating original greeting cards for the holiday season and selling them on (and possibly off) campus. Designs are due by (Wed.) Sept. 30 to the AIGA folder on the server. All designs should be formatted to a quarter of a letter size piece of paper. (4.25" x 5.5") They can be horizontal or vertical. We can make more of a profit if these are 1 or 2 color designs, but if your design rocks and needs a 4 color printing job, do it!

All participating members will be asked to sell when the time comes.

As of now, there are not any plans for the 1st First Friday of the semester (Sept 4), but everyone is encouraged to car-pool down to the Crossroads and enjoy the open galleries and night life. We are however, hoping to make some plans with studios, companies, or galleries for the October First Friday. PLEASE make a suggestion of where you want to go...MK12 is on the list. Post your suggestions to the fb group page. ---more details to come, we may just tag along with senior seminar.

Babcock is hoping to get a group together to travel for a few days over the weekend of Oct. 16th. Ideas include L.A., Chicago, NY...let him know if you are interested and where you would want to go.

One of the first events of the year will consist of a "field trip" to our very own Career Services. Anyone who is not already registered should join us. We're going to go as a group during a meeting time (TBA) and a representative will also do a recording so we can post it on the server for anyone to use at any time. If you didn't know we have a Career Services office, or don't know where it is....you need to attend this event. They are a great resource that often goes un-noticed/used.

***MEMBERSHIP***
Word on the street (okay-hallway) is that official membership dues are only $50 a person payable to "AIGA student group" and due to Babcock by Sept. 15th. If we are unable to get a group of 20 people to pay dues then it goes up to $75 a person.

Remember: You do not have to pay dues to participate in many of our events on campus. However, AIGA holds many events throughout the year that are free or cheap for members, but are more expensive for non-members. There are also many advantages to paying dues like posting your portfolio/resume on the AIGA website and receiving printed resources and promo materials from AIGA if you are a member. Think about it...if you are a senior-REALLY think about it...this group is where the other professionals network.

Some juniors & seniors expressed interest in getting Megan Pace's plan for a design studio up and running. More information to come. If you are interested in designing, managing, or marketing the AIGA design studio, please come to our next meeting which is still TBA.

Thanx everyone...see you soon!
