AAF-KC Scholarship

For those who weren't able to go to Ad Club Career Day in November and hear about it in person, American Advertising Federation-Kansas City Foundation (previously Kansas City Ad Club) is offering scholarships for Fall 2010/Spring 2011 semesters to advertising, communications, marketing and graphic design students.

UCM students are eligible (and have won in the past!) The deadline for the application is February 1, 2010. To apply online, visit aafkc.com and go to About Us: Ad Club Foundation. The application process also requires an interview in Kansas City for students who's applications are being considered. Students will be informed by mail, shortly after the application deadline if they have been selected for an interview.

Eligible students include those who will be Juniors or Seniors during the 2010/2011 school year. (Graduate students NOT eligible.)
Financial assistance of $750 per semester (paid to the school) is automatically renewed for the following year if application is resubmitted and school and major status is confirmed. You will have the support and counsel of a mentor from the pro membership of AAF-KC and a one year membership of the AAF-KC including all its benefits and free attendance to regular program activities while in school.

Still debating about applying?
For more information about the scholarship, contact Rachel Hack (rachel@aafkc.com) or call the Ad Club office (816-822-0300).

Design Editor position at the Muleskinner

If you don't already know, the Design Editor position at the Muleskinner is open for next semester. The Design Editor is responsible for designing all pages of the newspaper excluding page 2 and the sports section. If anyone is interested, you should contact Lora at the Muleskinner office at 543-4050 or by email at muleskinner0304@yahoo.com. Be prepared to show samples of your design work. Having publication design is an advantage, but not required.

I highly suggest applying. It's a great way to get design work experience, something that future employers for internships or jobs will look for. I loved my time at the Muleskinner, and it was a great experience for me as a student designer. I also really hope that they keep graphic design students in that position, so DESIGNERS, PLEASE APPLY!!!

You're more than welcome to contact me if you have any questions. My email is hollywrightdesign@gmail.com or you can send me a message on facebook.

Speakeasy series

The SpeakEasy Series is all about connecting local creatives to each other around their shared interests. The events will be social or discussion oriented and will be limited to small groups of participants. Each group will have a member of the AIGA KC board as its moderator. Browse the proposed sessions here and contact the board member to participate. There are no AIGA KC registration fees—just find something that interests you, gather with a few design friends, and speak easy!

I encourage you all to sign up for at least one Speakeasy! It will be a lot of fun, and a great way to make connections and get involved.
